Albania
is Europe's poorest country. Oppressed by a communist
dictator for over 40 years the country was finally
hit in 1991 by the revolutionary change that brought
reform to other parts of Eastern Europe, exposing
Albania to the rest of the world. The needs were
enormous! The country's infrastructure had collapsed,
schools and hospitals were crumbling and people
were living in deprivation.
Since this time Albania has had it's ups & downs
as advances have been made to improve the quality
of life for the population. The 'get-rich-quick'
Pyramid Schemes collapsed in 1997 causing many
to lose their life's savings and resulting in
riots and unrest. Relative stability returned
after a new government had been elected in the
June.
In 1999 Albania faced another challenge as thousands
of Kosovars fled to them for refuge and help.
Although still a poor country in many ways, Albania
and it's people worked hard to provide for the
needs of their neighbours.
LightForce began working in Albania in 1992 and
to date more than 1000 people have personally
given their time as volunteers. 1000's of tons
of aid have been delivered. LightForce has repaired
hospitals & schools, supplying necessary equipment,
provided clothes, food and blankets, repaired
and constructed houses.
LightForce is also working on development projects
to provide training, long-term employment and
create small businesses thus enabling people to
rebuild their lives.
A Farm has been established, Church Plants are
being overseen by students who trained at our
Missions School, and Children's Camps are running
each summer enabling poor village children to
enjoy the sea, games, activities, teaching & instruction
on hygiene.
