LightForce is committed to playing a part
in the long-term development of Albania. Much
humanitarian aid work has been done since 1993
as well as the repairing of hospitals and schools
but the creation of meaningful employment for
local people is very high on the agenda. LightForce
has established a farm development in LEZHE.
LEZHE FARM

LightForce
imported 50 in-calf Jersey heifers in July 2000.
Housing is provided in open stalls and concrete
yard. Portable milking units are used - the first
of their kind in Albania as cows are normally
milked by hand!
Milk is sold to a local dairy where it is used
for making cheese, butter and yoghurt. LightForce
also uses milk to make ice-cream which is being
marketed in local shops and restaurants.
Grass & food for the cows are bought in Albania
- over 50 acres are leased - contractors are engaged
to do the work. The farm provides employment for
10 people.
Heifer calves are kept as replacements / additions
to the herd or sold to local farmers or aid agencies.
Bull calves are sold for meat.
The Albanian Ministry of Agriculture have appointed
the Lezhe Farm as the Jersey Cow Centre for Albania.
A pig unit has also been built on the farm with
facilities for fattening 300 pigs. The pigs are
fattened for sale in local butcher's shops. A
breeding unit is being established with 40 sows.
